Jamboree Heights is a small pocket off Sumners Road, west of the Centenary Highway. Hilly streets, brick-and-tile homes mostly thrown up in the 70s and 80s, a lot of them on slab. Solid houses. The wiring behind the walls is another story.
Forty-odd years of Brisbane summers, the odd room added out the back, and rewiring done by whoever quoted cheapest at the time. We’re based in Westlake, a few minutes up the road, so this is home turf for us.
What turns up in these streets
Old switchboards, mostly. Plenty of homes around here still run ceramic fuse boards or early breakers with no RCDs, the safety switches that have been mandatory on new work for years. If the board hasn’t been touched since the house went up, it almost certainly falls short of current standards. It’s also not doing the one job that matters: cutting the power fast enough to stop a shock from killing someone.
Ceiling fans are the other steady job. These brick homes hold the heat, and the original fan wiring was often run without its own switch line. So a quick fan swap can turn into a half-day once we open the ceiling. We tell you which it is before we start, not after.
Split-system aircon keeps us busy too. Slab homes with no roof cavity mean the cable has to be routed with a bit of thought, and on a sloping block the outdoor unit needs the right spot or it’ll rattle the neighbour’s wall.
