What these houses actually need
Most of Middle Park went up between the late 1960s and the 1970s, part of the Centenary Estate push out west. Lowset brick, project-home builds, decent for their day. Trouble is, the wiring inside a lot of them is now closer to 50 years old than 40.
Plenty still run the original ceramic fuse board. Pull a fuse, replace the fuse wire, hope for the best. No safety switches. And a fair few of these homes have had a back deck closed in or a second living area added somewhere along the way, with circuits stretched to feed loads they were never sized for. Split-system aircon. Induction cooktop. An EV charger in the carport. None of that was on the drawing board in 1972.
What we keep running into here:
- No RCD protection on the lights or power points. Something faults, nothing trips before a person cops it.
- Single-phase boards already full. No spare way to add a circuit without upgrading the lot.
- Corroded gear in the meter box. Fifty Brisbane summers of humidity do that.
- Old smoke alarms that won’t meet the QLD interconnected-alarm rules landing in 2027.
A switchboard upgrade sorts most of that in one go. New board, safety switches fitted, compliance certificate in your hand. On a house this age it’s the one job that earns its keep.
